How to Grow Long, Strong Nails

Many of us are trying to grow longer, stronger nails right now. But if your nails are still brittle and flaky, it can be a frustrating experience. 


So, here are some tips to help you achieve healthier-looking nails. 

1. Use a cuticle oil 

Keeping your nails as hydrated as possible is one of the best ways to help them grow faster. For super-strong nails, try to use cuticle oil on the cuticle and nail bed every day. 


Jojoba or coconut oils all work really well for this. Otherwise, there are plenty of options available for this important step in your nail care routine. 

2. Take biotin supplements 

Biotin is an essential nutrient that’s found in egg yolks, nuts, soybeans, whole grains, and bananas. It plays a key role in having healthy hair, skin, and nails. 


However, it’s a common deficiency and studies show that this could lead to brittle nails that break easily. If this is the case, taking an extra biotin supplement can be beneficial. 


Increasing your biotin intake, either with foods or supplements, can support nail health and increase the thickness and hardness of your nails while boosting growth.  

3. File your nails regularly 

Filing your nails can help them grow longer as it prevents them from snagging or breaking. But, to avoid damaging, splitting, or tearing the nails, it’s best to choose a soft nail file. 


A soft file will give a smooth finish. Make sure you file in one direction using long, gentle strokes starting from the outside to make sure the nails don’t split and end up in an even shape.  

4. Eat a healthy diet 

Eating a varied, healthy diet is best for your overall health, and this will show on your nails. 


Make sure you include plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables in your diet, as well as lean meat, whole grains, oily fish, nuts and seeds, eggs, and dairy products. 


For nail growth, in particular, make sure your diet is rich in calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B9, and folic acid. You should also minimize your consumption of alcohol and caffeine. 

5. Avoid products with harsh chemicals 

Exposing your nails to lots of harsh or toxic chemicals can damage them, and this will limit nail growth and make your nails much more prone to breaking. 


It’s better to avoid glue-on artificial nails as these can weaken your nails. 


If you use nail polish remover and nail varnish instead, try to avoid chemicals like toluene, dibutyl phthalate, or formaldehyde, and opt for toxin-free alternatives instead. 

6. Practice good nail hygiene

Lastly, keeping your nails groomed and clean can encourage growth and reduce breakage as it stops bacteria growing underneath the nail bed and keeps them hydrated. 


You can do this by cleaning your nails, trimming, and moisturizing them every day, as well as avoiding biting your nails or cutting them too short.
